Pitch Format Guidelines

To see how pitches are formatted and how they look in Writers Pitch Book when it goes to agents, editors and film producers, click here.

Please write your own pitches in the same format as shown in our sample. Don’t worry about the type of font or size. We will reformat graphics to match.

For example:

FICTION

Title: Your Fabulous Title Goes Here

Status: Completed unpublished manuscript OR indie-published book OR traditionally published book OR e-book.

Word Count: 80,000 (for fiction writers only).

Your compelling logline/pitch goes here. Note: please review How To Write A Logline.

Writer: Your impressive bio goes here.

You have a maximum of 150 words for your logline pitch AND bio (not including the words “FICTION,” “Title:,” and “Writer:”) Also, “Status: and status info,” “Word Count: and word count info” do not count toward your 150 words.)

Warning: Only the first 150 words of your logline pitch and bio will be used. No exceptions. If your logline pitch and bio submission exceeds 150, we will use only the first 150 words.

    Hi, Sharon,
I was at the meeting in St Augustine Saturday, and appreciate your extending the deadline for your current Pitch Book to Friday. I have my novel’s 150 word pitch ready to send to you, however, going back over the information above, I have a question: what does: “Word Count: 80,000 (for fiction writers only)” mean? Please don’t tell me it means that the maximum number of words for a novel is 80,000! It has not been published, but is available on a pdf file from my St Augustine guidebook’s website as above. Also, the concensus is, from those who have read the novel, that it will make a GREAT movie. One comment just received: “Your word descriptions are paintings-in my mind’s eye-I could see those (Victorian) houses.” Does your Pitch Book go to all categories mentioned, or will you single out for my pitch to go to just someone involved in making movies? Or publisher? Or ???? Thank you in advance for your answer. I will have a surgical procedure on my back tomorrow (Tuesday) so I may be a little slow getting back to you, if needed, or I WILL get the pitch to you by or before Friday. Many thanks again – Elsie

Hi Elsie, Thanks for your question. The word count section of your pitch is for YOUR word count, no matter how many words. I had to insert a number in the example so writers could see where it should go. All pitches go to all agents, editor and producers EXCEPT for agents or editors who ask for specific genres and nothing else (like children’s book or YA). That’s rare. ALSO, Hollywood producers get the whole Pitch Book. Agents and editors aren’t interested in scripts or film/tv rights, so they don’t get the SCREENPLAY and TV & FILM SECTIONS. Email me if you have additional questions: Sharon@WritersPitchBook.com.

Best of luck on your surgery. Also a note: I removed your phone number from your comment above since all comments are public.

      Write on!
      Sharon

As a follow up to this, you might want to share your reivews on the Amazon or Barnes and Noble sites under product reivews . Authors love to have their books reviewed on these sites it’s good for the author as well as the potential book buyer.

      • Sharon Y Cobb says:

Great idea, Manoj. Positive reviews of authors’ books are invaluable. Thanks for the suggestion.

  2. Amanda Lee says:

Hello Ms. Cobb. I’m an author and I have written a psychological thriller. I’m very interested in pitches for my book Deranged. I have a question: My logline is basically 821 words, (yes i know…lol), If it exceeds the 150; will anybody ever see the full bio and logline?
I know the bio & logline must be 150 words and no more.

    • Sharon Y Cobb says:

Hi Amanda, Love the title of your thriller. It scares me (in a thrillerish kind of way)! Writers love to write, so we can really put a lot of words on paper to convey our story. But with a logline for Writers Pitch Book you will definitely need to submit a total of 150 words which includes your title, logline and bio. I know you can do it. Lots of authors have surprised themselves by using our logline formula for their pitch and submitted brilliant pitches. Anything over 150 words is not included in the Pitch Book. It’s because agents, editors and especially those glamorous folks in Hollywood don’t have time to read more than that. Hope to see your pitch in the Fall Pitch Book. Sharon

  3. Roger C. Campbell says:

can we put two pitches on the same email or are two different emails required?

    • Sharon Y Cobb says:

Hi Roger, Absolutely. You certainly may submit two pitches in the same email. No worries. Thanks! Sharon
